I Heart Faces – Back to School!

autumn-school

This week at I Heart Faces the theme is Back to School! Well, for us it isn’t going back to school… It’s going to school for the very first time! Autumn started her first day of kindergarten last Monday! She just loves it and she really loves her teacher! (Yay! I was hoping we’d get one that Autumn does well with and I think they’re a perfect fit!)

I took a bunch of pictures that day, but I kept coming back to this one as I was choosing my picture this week. That little pink heart has a very special meaning… Autumn has had a very hard time with her nerves, getting frustrated and being able to calm down. So a few years ago we bought her a “calm-down bear” that she could hold that would help her calm down when she’s in these situations. Of course, she can’t drag her calm-down bear to school with her so I made her this little heart that she can hold when she’s having a rough time. She can think of Mommy and Daddy and how much we love her. I am actually having a bracelet made for her with hearts, since I’m sure this little heart will be lost very soon. It should last a lot longer! She’s so excited and she can’t wait for it to be finished!

Check out I Heart Faces for some more great Back to School pictures!

Michelle- Great photo/ (photos on the post below too!) I am an elementary teacher and wehn organizing my books this summer I came across one of my faves…”The Kissing Hand” (the author’s name escapes me right now). If you have not read this book you will LOVE it for Autumn. Your idea of the heart reminds me of that story. You are a very sweeet mommy! :)

Oh that’s a very sweet story and photo!! I did a similar thing with my son when he went on his first school camp in Grade 3 – I decorated a little box (it was a matchbox actually) and told him that we (his Daddy and I) had filled it with hugs and kisses so if he was missing us he could open it and get some hugs and kisses from us. He still has it and when he got back from Camp he made one for us to use if we were missing him during the day while he was at school!! lol

First of all, Kudos on the Calm-Down-Bear. I have been trying to figure out a way to get my son to calm down without having to take a time out or something like that. He gets very excited and nervous when we are in large groups of people wich causes him to act out. He will be five at the end of next month. Secondly, great shot! beautiful Bokeh, clear and crisp photo. I love it.

Question: when did you integrate the calm down bear? how did you get her to understand what it was?

Great work, and thank you for the inspiring post as well.

Thank you Chelsi! We gave it to her around 3 1/2. She was born premature, she’s always had a problem with her nerves and trouble calming down. So we gave it to her and told her is was a magic calm down bear that she could hold when she needs to calm down. The bear had magic in it so when she held it the bear could help her. She understood what it was and how it worked pretty much immediately. I think the key word was “magic!”

We use it all the time, it’s been through the washer many, many times! She can have it when she gets in trouble, it helps a lot with the out of control fits. She also goes to sleep with it every night. It’s just something she can physically transfer her frustrations and nerves to. It’s been a lifesaver!

Congratulations on being fan of the week Michelle! You look so young in the picture on I heart faces, I thought you were a teenager : ) I thought you were one of Amy’s kids :) but you are Amy. I love your pictures. I love your style. Dreamy and very sweet. Refreshing : )

I would have left a picture on contemplative picture, which I love, by the way, but I don’t see a comment bar up there. Good luck!
